Here's a great Freeware addon for your collection! Intended to replace the MiG 21, MiG 23, Su 15 and the Su 17, the MiG 29 Fulcrum was initially revealed to the U.S. through a satellite photograph and was designated the "Ram - L". It made its first flight on October 6, 1977. After many design changes, it was declared operational in early 1985.
Similar to its F/A 18 counterpart, the supersonic and agile MiG 29 has 45 degree low swept wings above twin reheated turbofan engines that are buried in the fuselage, but under the wing. The control surfaces are all animated, including the leading edge and flaps. More than 600 MiG 29's are in service in various countries, among them are of course the former Soviet Air Forces, the Luftwaffe, and also exports to Cuba and other countries. The air intakes for the engines are of an interesting configuration. Many Soviet runways were not of top notch condition. One of the reasons is the type of concrete that was used. It just did not hold up very well. Being a rough and tumble crowd anyway, the Soviets designed most of their aircraft for some "tough playgrounds"! The danger of foreign debris getting sucked up into the jet intakes was a real threat. To counter this problem, they configured the MiG 29's intake to be that of either the straight shot through, or, by closing the front intakes off with panels, change the intake configuration to be from the top of the wings, near the root. In this way they could avoid the debris I had mentioned. I guess nobody over there ever had to do "Police Call"! Vets should know what I'm talking about! Hey, pick up that cigarette butt! But back to the story of the MiG.
This is a very nicely modeled MiG 29, that comes with its own Custom Installer, which was easy and pain free! The exterior is smooth and clean and comes in the following paints:
Russian Air Force
Czech
Fuerza Aerea Peruana
Fuerza Aerea Revolutionaria
Hungary
German Luftwaffe
Luftwaffe Commemorative
The 2D cockpit is clear but in Russian. Most of the gauges and instruments are self-explanatory though. Being in Russian does add to the authenticity, but you sometimes have to look twice to make sure you are reading the right gauge. The Virtual Cockpit is there, but fuzzy. However, and this is a big plus with this add on, it comes with an operational TCAS, with adjustable ranges, and works in both 2D and VC view modes! It will pick up your AI traffic. I did not check out whether it picks up multyplayer craft however, so you'll just have to do some work yourselves! Another surprise, and I mean this literally and figuratively, was the sonic boom when you break the sound barrier. It truly startled me! I thought someone had banged on the wall!
Overall, this is a fun aircraft to fly, and is definitely worthy being in your collection of fighter craft! I'm giving a 4 out of 5 for this aircraft. It would have made an easy 5 for 5 had the VC been clearer, but in the big picture, these developers did a great job with this aircraft. Thanks for letting us fly it!
