FBZ's Fast Flight's
New Zealand
NZQN (Queenstown) to NZWF (Wanaka)
of flying provides a lot of "landscape eye candy", and opportunities for various adventures. As you will see in the screenshots, this holds true for this flight brief, but it also has you flying over some very richly landscaped lowlands, with some extreme cliffs to contend with. In the upper left image, you can see that taking off from RW 5 isn't too much of a challenge, but you had better have your glide slope right on the money, or else you'll be finding yourself sliding down a very sheer cliff and going splash!
This FBZ Fast flight takes place in the beautiful country of New Zealand. Flying one of my favorite biplanes, the Waco Classic, I decided to scope out this "Island" (I mean that in a good way all you New Zealander's!) a little bit more. I started the flight at the Queenstown Airport, (NZQN). This airport provided a beautiful starting point for my short little jaunt over to Wanaka, NZ, and (NZWF). I found that upon take off, I really had a tough time wanting to stick to my flight plan, for looking around while sitting at the airport; I saw quite a few directions that offered visual adventure!
But letting the "discipline of flight" rule my thoughts for the time being, I stuck to the flight plan that would take me to Wanaka, and I was not disappointed! This is truly a great country for VFR flying, for the sites are endless! You may have noticed that so far, the FBZ Fast Flight's have centered mostly around mountainous terrain, since I figured this type
Queenstown is located in the southern central portion of New Zealand, and has year round activities for both leisure and adventure seekers. Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital and the home to the world's first commercial bungee jump site. the image to the right shows that the region is rich for opportunities of excellent sight-seeing, and it also will provide the "Floats" enthusiast with countless choices of water ways for a bit of amphibian work! The most striking feature of this region, to me, was the abundance of cliffs and how they were located just about everywhere you looked!
The following shots are enroute to Wanaka, which is a small town, nestled in amongst mountains, waterways, and some of those cliffs that I was telling you about. It strikes me that this type of terrain may be great for some glider flying also! Go to Avsim.com and do a search for the file nz-islands-ngsrtm.zip in the FS2004 Scenery category, and check out the New Zealand Mesh that Peter Palmain has worked up for us simmers to enjoy! I highly recommend the file!
