FBZ's Fast Flight's
Pisa, Italy
LIRP to LIQW
This FBZ Fast Flight takes us to a country that I wish I had travelled to, and perhaps will someday...Italy. What a beautifully diverse country, packed with so much history! For this flight, I chose the city of Pisa, which is known for what famous landmark?...Yep, you got it! The famous Leaning Tower of Pisa ! I have been intrigued by this historical landmark for some years, catching a bit of news here and there about the efforts that are going into keeping the building upright, and not toppling over. The city of Pisa is located in Tuscany, central Italy. The origins of Pisa
are unknown, as even the ancient Romans referred to the city as an old city! There have been a few theroies as to who may have founded the city, among them are the Pelasgi, the Greeks, the Etruscans, and the Ligurians. OK, I must admit that I had never heard of the first and the last, but hey, learn something new everyday, and you'll keep the psycho analysys away! That's what I always say! But, back to Pisa! There is SO MUCH history surrounding this area, that if you're interested, you can click here and check out the Wikipedia Site which is a great source of information!
A guy by the name of Servius, who was a Roman Grammarian (WOW! Now that's a job that's on the edge!) had thought that Pisa may have been founded thirteen centuries before the birth of Christ. So OK, I'm convinced that Pisa has been and will probably be around for a long, long time!
The Tower of Pisa, or as it is otherwise known, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Pisa. Originally intended to stand upright (of course!), it began to lean
While looking for some possible Hop Race Routes, I decided to take a putt up north, from San Giusto (LIRP), Pisa, to the Luni Military Airfield LIQW. There are some beautiful mountain ranges in this region, and they were not too far from the coast, so I strayed a bit off course to do some scenic mountain sight seeing! There's some outstanding ranges to be explored, and would also be a great area for the rotor heads out there, dipping into and out of the canyons that are everywhere. The course I followed is outlined in red in the graphic below. The entire country of Italy will provide you with endless hours of very enjoyable flying time, so don't miss out on a diverse and beautiful flight! Explore Italy... I don't think you'll be disappointed in what you find!
fairly soon after its construction back in 1173. This was due to a poorly laid foundation and a loose substrate that has contributed to the shifting of the foundation. I wonder if this same contractor had a hand in building some of the other towers around the world that are leaning, which, to my surprise, are many! The tower stands 183.27 feet o one side and 186.02 feet on the other. 294 steps lead to the top of the 833 year old tower. Click here for a pretty cool satellite view of the tower. The final solution to correcting the lean was to remove 38 cubic meters of soil from underneath the raised end. The tower has been declared stable for at least another 300 years.
Here are a few shots of this region for you...
